JOB TITLE: KLCC Public Radio Foundation Journalism Fellow

JOB SUMMARY: The KLCC Public Radio Foundation Journalism Fellow will be responsible for covering topics associated with diversity, including race, access, class differences and culture in this unique fellowship program.

KLCC FM 89.7 and NPR member station located in Eugene, Oregon offers this fellowship for an aspiring journalist who seeks to hone their skills while working in a dynamic local newsroom. The Fellow will work full-time, for 12 months, as a contributing member of the award-wining KLCC news team in Eugene, Oregon.

Fellows will acquire a greater understanding of public radio and extensive experience as a broadcast journalist. Under the guidance of award-winning journalists, the Fellow will produce news reports and features using a lens of diversity, equity and inclusion. They will report on areas such as education, arts, healthcare, government and the environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Produce quality features and news reports for KLCC.

• Engage with the community to report on people, issues and places.

• Create regular reports for web and radio that reach a diverse population.

• Participate in newsroom and station duties as needed.

• Produce a KLCC Community Conversation about a topic uncovered producing stories.

• Report to the KLCC Public Radio Foundation as needed.

• Work a 40-hour workweek for one year.

TRAINING

The Fellow will work alongside KLCC reporters and staff. Training will include an introduction to the business of public radio and include exposure to:

• Public radio

• Journalism ethics

• Writing for radio and web

• Audio producing

• On-air skills

• Research and information gathering

• Photography

o Social media

o On-air fundraising

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

•Knowledge, sensitivity and/or understanding of diversity issues preferably with a regional perspective.

•Academic training in journalism preferred. •An interest in and passion for public media.

• A bachelor’s degree. Excellent verbal and written communication; computer (PC) and organizational skills are required to successfully perform in KLCC’s fast-paced, multi-platform news organization.

COMPENSATION

Fellows will be compensated at the same rate as an entry-level KLCC news reporter $15.97 (current wage as of May 10, 2019).

Benefits such as paid holidays, parking/travel reimbursement and a phone stipend are offered. No health care benefit is available. This Fellowship is based at the KLCC studios downtown Eugene, Oregon.

The KLCC Diversity Journalism Fellow reports to the KLCC News Director and is an employee of the KLCC Public Radio Foundation.

Brian Bull is an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Oregon, and remains a contributor to the KLCC news department. He began working with KLCC in June 2016.   In his 27+ years as a public media journalist, he's worked at NPR, Twin Cities Public Television, South Dakota Public Broadcasting, Wisconsin Public Radio, and ideastream in Cleveland. His reporting has netted dozens of accolades, including four national Edward R. Murrow Awards (22 regional),  the Ohio Associated Press' Best Reporter Award, Best Radio Reporter from  the Native American Journalists Association, and the PRNDI/NEFE Award for Excellence in Consumer Finance Reporting.
