Lane Co. Sheriff: Highway 126 'Significantly Impacted'

Andy Nelson/ Register-Guard/pool

People hoping to get back on Highway 126 will have to wait much longer than expected. The road has been closed for the past week to make room for emergency crews working on the Holiday Farm Fire and for public safety.

At a recent meeting for residents affected by the Holiday Farm Fire, Lane County Sheriff Cliff Harold said the road will need a significant amount of work from fire crews. Search and rescue teams will also need to investigate along the highway.

“And then there’s a significant amount of work that highway crews are going to have to do. And again I know it’s hard for you at home to imagine that but, boulders coming down, trees coming down, soil coming down, that’s going to happen as we have weather changes,” Harold said.

Harold said the community should know Highway 126 will no longer be the beautiful drive that it once was. It remains closed to non-emergency personnel until further notice.

“I’m not an ODOT guy but I do want to set the community's expectations as best I can to say this highway is going to be impacted for a long period of time,” he said.
