The Lane County Farmers Market has received a nearly 100 thousand dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to increase access to locally grown food.
Laura Keir is with the Farmers Market. She says the grant will help with outreach to Spanish-speaking costumers. This includes offering market tours in Spanish. Keir says many people don’t know that the market takes SNAP, formerly known as food stamps.
Keir: “So one of the activities in this grant will be to partner with Food For Lane County to distribute more of the coupons for folks using their SNAP benefits at the market.”
Keir says the grant will also help with efforts to establish a year-round Farmers Market in Eugene. The Holiday Farmers Market is underway on Saturdays and Sundays at the Lane Events Center through December 20th.
