Lane County Invites Public Comment On Redistricting

Rachael McDonald

The Lane County Board of Commissioners is seeking public input on redistricting. It will hold a work sessionWednesday (Dec. 2) to start the conversation.

The Board of Commissioners is tasked with redistricting every 10 years, following the federal census.  For each electoral district, each of the five commissioners is supposed to represent more or less the same number of people. Lane County spokesperson Devon Ashbridge said, according to census projections, the county has grown by about 30,000 people since the last census, in 2010.
“Now, where has that growth happened will be the key question and are our five commissioner zones still well balanced when it comes to population or has one are seen growth that others haven’t?”
Ashbridge said if there’s no significant shift in the balance, the board can elect to not make any changes. The virtual work session will kick off the redistricting process with public comment. It’s this Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 9 a.m.
