Lane County Reports Zero Unhoused Have Yet Tested Positive For Virus

Lane County Public Health video

Lane County saw five new positive cases of COVID-19 over the weekend—putting the overall caseload at 65. Today (Tuesday,) Public Health officials say sudden upticks can be expected, given the incubation period for the virus.

Testing and contact tracing are working, they say. Three of the newest cases were associated with *existing cases and then those patients were isolated to limit transmission.

Lane County Public Information Officer Devon Ashbridge says sentinel testing will continue at Shelters and social service providers.

“Currently we have had no members of our unsheltered community to test positive for COVID-19,” Ashbridge said. “We will continue sentinel testing in that population however, because of its vulnerability.”

As more local businesses re-open or expand services, county officials encourage residents to patronize them-- as long as it’s done safely. Ashbridge emphasizes good hygiene and physical distancing continues to matter as Phase I of re-opening begins.

Ashbridge says the county prepares to hire two temporary nurses who will work on communicable disease investigations during the pandemic. They will also help with fentanyl testing as the county continues to combat a scourge of overdoses due to the deadly drug.
