The Oregon Veterans’ Home announced late Saturday that another one of their residents has died. The resident tested positive for COVID-19 on March 22 and had underlying medical conditions.
This is the third death due to the virus at the Home. The Oregon Health Authority also announced two additional positive cases at the Veterans’ Home Saturday. Thirteen of the 16 confirmed cases at the home have recovered, including a 104-year-old man who celebrated his birthday last week.
It’s a tradition since the home opened in 2014 for every veteran who passes away to be honored with the “Walk of Honor” to recognize their service. Staff, residents and family would line the halls to salute and pay last respects. Saturday, staff adjusted the long-time tribute. Staff lined the sidewalks outside while the body was escorted out of the home, draped with a burial flag and a handmade quilt from Quilts of Valor.
