Lincoln County Board of Commissioners has approved funds to buy a vacant house in an effort to reduce recidivism in Newport. The home will provide stable housing for men at risk of homelessness after serving time.
The property located near Yaquina [yUHquinnUH] bay, has five bedrooms and a price tag of over 340,000 dollars. The house will be one of 4 homes owned by the County Parole and Probation program where director Tony Campa, said the need for transitional housing is high.
“We have homeless offenders that we need to get placed so we can make sure they’re in an environment where they have the best opportunity for them to be successful.," Campa said.
"As far as programing goes, you know it depends on each individual’s needs, and we have individual’s that have mental health issues, substance abuse issues," said Campa.
Participants in the housing program will have access mental health treatment as well as a place to live. Funds for the purchase came from state money earmarked for probation and parole.
