Lincoln County Celebrates Historic Chitwood Covered Bridge

wikepedia.com

Lincoln County is celebrating the renovation of one of its covered bridges Monday. The Chitwood Covered Bridge is one of about 800 historically recognized covered bridges in the U.S.

The Chitwood Covered Bridge was built in 1893 and enabled residents to cross the Yaquina River. Originally it was uncovered, until it was refurbished in 1929. The National Historic Bridge Preservation Program and Lincoln County both contributed more than a million dollars to replace roofing, siding, corbels, and give it a new paint job. The bridge is named after the once bustling railway settlement of Chitwood, which is now a ghost town.

The dedication of the Chitwood Covered Bridge is at 2 PM Monday near milepost 17 on Highway 20.
