Springfield residents have a choice between two experienced candidates in the May 19th primary.
The Springfield Mayor’s Race is a contest between incumbent Christine Lundberg, and retired UO Administrator Mike Eyster, who chairs the Lane Community College Board of Education. Lundberg was born and raised in Springfield. Before she was elected mayor in 2011, she was a City Councilor. At a Zoom candidate forum with the City Club of Springfield and League of Women Voters, Lundberg touted her ability to lead.
Lundberg: “My experienced leadership is needed now. The COVID-19 crisis has hit us hard. Both as a health crisis and an economic crisis. The recovery from this unprecedented situation requires experienced city government leadership.”
At the same forum, Mike Eyster said he brings strong, decisive leadership too. He said Springfield is in distress.
Eyster: “This distress existed before COVID-19. Springfield has underperformed for the past two decades. I’m running because Springfield needs new leadership to capture the best ideas, the energy and the vision of our existing business and community leaders.”
Eyster wants to revitalize Springfield beyond the downtown. In addition to heading the LCC Board, he’s on the Springfield Utility Board and previously served on the Lane Transit District board (2005-2013). The deadline to return ballots is May 19th at 8 p.m.
