New App For Bike Riders

Lane Council of Governments

A free smart-phone application is aimed at helping transportation planners better understand people's biking habits in Eugene and Springfield.

ORcycle allows bicyclists to track their routes and report dangerous locations. Josh Roll with Lane Council of Governments says the app gathers data to help inform transportation planners. It was developed by Portland State University and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Roll: "I think this is, you know, a unique opportunity for Eugene / Springfield cyclists to show us the routes that they feel comfortable and the routes that they feel uncomfortable on. And it's a low cost way for us to gather the data."

The hope is that information will help planners make improvements to popular bike routes. The ORCycle app is for everyone from occasional to daily cyclists.
