NPR Reporter Howard Berkes in Eugene Nov 12

©2007 NPR, by Stephen Voss

NPR News Correspondent Howard Berkes will be in Eugene November 12 to speak about the impact of new media on traditional media.

His presentation Typewriter to Twitter – an NPR Reporter's Journey will be held at 175 Knight Law Center on Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m.

The public is invited to this free event.  This event is sponsored by KLCC in partnership with UO Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, and UO School of Journalism and Communication.

Imagine journalism with no computers, no internet, no cell phones, and no Twitter.  That’s what it was like 35 years ago when NPR Correspondent Howard Berkes began his radio journalism career at KLCC in Eugene.

Today, Berkes is an investigative reporter for NPR, and no longer depends on typewriters, audio tape, razor blades or alligator clips.  Radio has expanded into multiplatform media and the tools of the trade have been radically transformed.  Berkes will share the pain and pleasure of his own transformation from old media to new, and how these changes have altered the role of news reporters.

During this week Berkes's five part investigation of mine safety regulation airs on NPR stations nationwide, beginning with All Things Considered on Wednesday Nov 12, and continuing on Morning Edition and All Things Considered on both Thursday and Friday.  The series is a hard hitting investigation that exposes the consequences of lax mine safety enforcement.

While in Eugene Berkes will also guest lecture at the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, and provide a training workshop for KLCC reporters.  KLCC is pleased to welcome back one of its original reporters, and share his NPR journey with today's Eugene audience.
