An October 4th Prefontaine Classic will conditionally be the first event at a newly-renovated Hayward Field, since the COVID-19 pandemic caused cancellations and postponements at the U of O venue.
The Diamond League announced Tuesday a provisional calendar for its international track and field competitions. The tentative schedule begins in Monaco in mid-August. Due to the differences in world pandemic health and safety rules, the Diamond League says each venue will set its own format, and meets may run as exhibitions. Oregon Governor Kate Brown has banned large gatherings through September. Whether and how an October Pre Classic happens will follow state guidance on travel and live sports.
In the release, the Diamond League announced Eugene would host the series final in 2023. If it comes to pass, Hayward would see the Olympic trials in 2021, the World Athletics Championship in 2022 and the Diamond League final the following year.
