The Eugene-Springfield Fire Department and Eugene Police Department are reminding residents that while fireworks are a traditional way to celebrate the Independence Day holiday, they can be bothersome and they pose an extreme fire hazard. They encourage everyone to be mindful of neighbors who may be sensitive to loud noises due to post traumatic stress disorder or other conditions. This especially pertains to combat veterans, who can be impacted by the sounds and sights of fireworks.
While legal fireworks are allowed within Eugene city limits on the Fourth of July, Eugene Police will be staffing additional officers for the holiday to patrol areas with a high density of fireworks-related complaint calls or visible displays of fireworks. Legal fireworks produce only smoke, sparks or fire but do not explode, eject balls of fire, fly into the air more than 12 inches or travel more than six feet on the ground.
Fireworks went on sale June 23. Consumer fireworks discharges within the Eugene city limits are restricted to July 3 and 4, and December 31 and January 1. Possession of illegal fireworks is a class B misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of $2,500 and six months in jail.
EPD crime prevention specialists made contact at locations of reported illegal use from last year. They further canvased in areas where an exact address was not known or provided. They provided an educational flyer and asked for voluntary compliance.
Fire crews will patrol neighborhoods on July 4th, to note and report illegal fireworks activity.
