Oregon Lawmakers Schedule Vote On Firearms Lock-up Bill

The Oregon House is set to vote Monday on a bill that would require gun owners to keep their weapons locked up when not in use.

House Bill 2510 would require guns be secured when they’re not being carried or otherwise under

their owner’s immediate control. This could be done by keeping the gun in a locked container, or by using a trigger lock.

The goal of the bill is to limit the ability of children to access weapons. It’s also meant to make it harder for a person with suicidal thoughts to get a gun, as well as reduce gun thefts. If a gun is stolen, the bill would require its owner to notify police within 72 hours.

Opponents have said the bill would make it harder for lawful gun owners to access their weapons in an emergency. If the measure passes the House, it would next go to the Oregon Senate.
