Oregon’s Attorney General Urges Businesses To Relax Cancellation Policies

Oregon Department of Justice

Oregon’s Attorney General is asking businesses to relax their usual cancellation policies for events disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With gatherings of more than 25 people banned for the foreseeable future in Oregon, people who have upcoming events are having to cancel, postpone, or radically alter their plans. With many venues requiring pre-payment or non-refundable deposits, that could leave event organizers in the position of losing money if they have to cancel.

Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum is urging businesses to provide refunds or credits to people who can’t hold their event due to Coronavirus restrictions. Her request isn’t a mandate, and Rosenblum says she recognizes the toll the outbreak is taking on businesses and their employees. "We must pull together to support small businesses during this crisis," she said.

But she says the event restrictions, which were ordered by Governor Kate Brown, will help slow the spread of the virus, and thus save lives.

Separately, Rosenblum is urging Oregonians to report possible cases of price gouging during the COVID-19 emergency. The Oregon Department of Justice has an online consumer complaint form on its website.
