Oregon Starts Season With A Win Against Fresno State

@OregonFootball Twitter

Oregon Football said hello to their 2021 season with a win Saturday. The No. 11 Ducks beat Fresno State 31-24 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

It was the first time fans were in attendance for Oregon football since 2019, and they had a hazy view of the action. Air quality in Eugene was at unhealthy levels at kick off, and improved just slightly over the course of the game. Attendance was limited to those who showed proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative COVID-19 test. The Ducks played their 2020 season in an empty stadium because of the pandemic.

Quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. went 15 for 24 and passed for 172 yards in the Ducks’ win. In the first quarter, CJ Verdell and Troy Dye each had 1 touchdown for the Ducks. Brown connected with Johnny Johnson III on a 32-yard pass in the second quarter, expanding the Ducks’ lead to 21-13 heading into halftime.

Defensive End and 2020 Pac 12 Championship game MVP Kayvon Thibideaux suffered an ankle injury and left the game in the first half. He returned to the sidelines in street clothes and a stabilizing boot on his left ankle at the start of the third.

Fresno State (1-1) tied it up after a scoreless third quarter for Oregon. In the fourth, Brown scored on a 30-yard run with just under 3 minutes left in the game, putting the Ducks on top to stay.

Up Next: The Ducks hit the road to take on Ohio State Sat., Sept. 11. The Buckeyes won their season opener against Minnesota, 45-31.
