With the tax filing deadline of April 18th nearing closer, the Oregon Department of Revenue is reminding residents to delay no longer. KLCC’s Brian Bull reports.
Revenue officials say as of April 1st, just over half of the expected 2.2 million returns from Oregonians have been filed.
Wanda Wedmore is President of the Oregon Society of Tax Consultants. She says she and other professionals are swamped by clients who’ve waited this long to start filing.
“I think one thing that’d help the taxpayer out there, is if they would call someone and see if they’re taking new clients, first of all," says Wedmore. "And if they are, mention to them that they’re willing to file an extension. And that way they can wait a little longer.
"And if they’re getting a refund, the State of Oregon pays interest on that refund.”
On the other hand, an extension to file is not an extension to pay on owed taxes. Interest on tax due still applies past April 19th.
State revenue officials say if someone can’t pay their taxes, to contact them about possibly setting up a monthly payment plan.
