Scammers claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service are targeting the Eugene area.
Phone recording: "The reason of this call is to inform you that IRS is filing a lawsuit against you."
This is the call being reported to Eugene Police. The computer-generated voice instructs people to call a phone number. Detective Steve Williams says scammers try multiple tactics to get people to send money.
Williams: "There's no reason the government is going to call you and tell you you're in trouble. They just don't do that If the IRS is going to file a lawsuit, you're going to have IRS agents dropping by your door. You're going to be served with legal papers."
Williams says trust your instincts. If it sounds like a scam it probably is one.
Other scams Eugene Police have heard about recently involve people saying they need money for bail, secret shoppers, and rental properties.
