Six Eugene Students Qualify For National Debate Tournament

Keith Eddins

Six Eugene high schoolers will compete at the National Speech and Debate tournament in June. The teens qualified in regional competition over the weekend.

Elective academics have suffered in recent years with school funding cuts but Keith Eddins says Oregon is now in a debate renaissance. He volunteer coaches the debate team at Eugene’s Oak Hill School. Eddins says debate teaches important skills, including public speaking.
Eddins: “The kids learn presence. They learn organization. They learn how to convey a message succinctly and persuasively.”
Oak Hill is a private school with just 44 students in its high school. 4 students are heading to nationals, including Eddin’s daughter, Laurel, who will compete in “Extemporaneous Speaking”. Two students from South Eugene High also qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Salt Lake City in June.
