The number of new COVID-19 cases per day has begun to drop in Lane County. Public health officials are cautiously optimistic but still concerned about transmission trends.

Public Information Officer Jason Davis reported the daily case count has gone from around 10 to an average of 4 or 5.

“Overall we’re seeing a slow down in number of cases,” Davis said. “So thank you to our community and to everyone who has been a part of that. It really is a community effort.”

Davis said similar diligence is needed to curb rates of transmission during small gatherings and travel. Of the latest 300 cases, 99 are travel related.

He said, “those are individuals that have left Lane County, gone to somewhere else and then returned only to be diagnosed with COVID-19.”

Davis said even more positive cases have resulted from people visiting Lane County. And he advised residents to think twice before having out-of-town guests—especially from hot spot regions.

As of Tuesday, 08/18/2020, there have been 637 cases in Lane County. 31 individuals are currently infectious, one is hospitalized, and 4 people have died from COVID-19.
