SNAP Program Offers Replacement Benefits For Food Lost To Fire

wordpress

Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)--  who have also lost food because of the wildfires—may be eligible for replacement benefits.

Whether food was ruined because of power outages, evacuation or fire, SNAP recipients are urged to apply to have benefits replaced for the month of September. The federal government has offered an extension to allow Oregon Department of Human Services to accept applications through Oct 7th.

Dan Haun is Director of the Self Sufficiency Program.

“Food is one of those absolute necessities that people need,” Haue said. “And we really want to make the replacement of the SNAP benefits as easy as possible for folks so they can get that basic need met and worry about the other impacts they may be facing right now.”

Current SNAP recipients who have lost food purchased with SNAP benefits due to storms, flooding, power outages, fires or other misfortunes may be eligible to have their SNAP benefits replaced.

To start the replacement process, recipients may visit a local SNAP office, dial 2-1-1 or just google ‘replacement benefits Oregon’ to find the website. Haun says once approved, the replaced benefits will appear on the recipient’s Oregon Trails card.
