Lane County commissioners heard public comments Tuesday night from several people protesting the planned closure of Peacehealth’s Nurse Midwifery Birth Center in Springfield.
Blue River resident Deona Brownell had two children at the birth center.
“I’m here to ask you to encourage this health care goliath and leaders of our county and state, to meet with Lane County Friends of the Birth Center. To negotiate, to problem solve and to not just quit,” says Brownell.
Among the speakers, was a Eugene resident-- who along with his 3 brothers-- was born at the birth center. He said midwives also assisted in the births of his two children—one just 4 weeks ago.
The Lane County Board of Commissioners is responsible for leading discussions on community health. Commissioner Pete Sorenson expressed support for the birth center.
There has been one or more operating in the Eugene-Springfield area for over 40 years.
