The Oregon Department of Revenue is hosting two town hall meetings in the Rogue Valley this week to discuss a new corporate business tax.
The so-called Corporate Activity Tax applies to businesses that make over $1 million per year. It was passed during the 2019 legislative session and will bring an estimated $1 billion per year to Oregon public schools.
Republican lawmakers boycotted a vote on the tax measure, arguing that their concerns were not being heard to by the Democratic supermajority.
The tax includes an annual $250, plus a 0.57 percent tax on commercial activity above $1 million dollars. It will take effect in 2020.
Town hall meetings with the Oregon Department of Revenue will take place at the Higher Education Center in Medford on Tuesday evening and at the Rogue Community College Small Business Development Center in Grants Pass on Wednesday morning.
The money generated from the program – known as the Student Success Act – will go to K-12 schools in Oregon. It will fund programs to improve graduation rates, early childhood education and career-technical education.
