Transgender advocacy group “TransPonder” held a march with about 150 people in Eugene, Saturday. The event was meant to shed a light on injustices faced by the LGBTQIA community.
Protesters condemned the Trump administration for reversing healthcare protections for the community in the affordable care act. They also stood in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
TransPonder board member River McKenzie says they planned to use the momentum from recent protests to support Black and Indigenous communities of color.
“TransPonder organized and is leading it, and you’ll see us up at the mic,” says McKenzie. “We’ll be helping lead the march and keeping everybody safe. We are in full solidarity with the other groups—especially the Black lives groups—as we are all under attack and terrorization from this administration. We’re standing together with one another.”
Marchers headed to the Federal Courthouse from Kesey Square, where chants like “Black Trans lives matter” and “no justice, no peace” could be heard by bystanders. The event ended around 2PM.
