The Labor Day weekend is typically summer’s last big “hurrah” for outdoor enthusiasts. But parks and forests agencies are urging people to take heed of the Pacific Northwest’s dry conditions, which are ripe for wildfires.

Susan Granbery of the Northwest Oregon Fire Prevention Team says with millions of visitors expected across the Cascades and Oregon Coast in the coming days, safety is key as most areas have restrictions on campfires.

“Visitors can use pressurized liquid or gas devices like stoves, grills, or lanterns, with shut-off valves," Granbery told KLCC.

"And they should place them where there’s adequate space from any flammable materials.”

Travelers are also urged to not drive or park on dry grass, and not to drag trailer chains. And fireworks, tracer bullets, and similar incendiary devices are banned on Oregon public lands.

People who cause fires can be fined, warns Granbery. Consequences can also depend on the extent of damage caused by a fire.
