UO President Says School Will Protect Undocumented Students

Jes Burns

Since Donald Trump’s presidential win, university students around the nation held rallies Wednesday calling on administrators to declare their schools “sanctuary campuses”.  The University of Oregon says it supports all its students regardless of immigration status.

Trump’s election has made a lot of people insecure since as a candidate he vowed to deport undocumented immigrants and proposed creating a registry of Muslims. U of O President Michael Schill says the school will protect all its students whether or not they’re documented.
Schill: “What we’re not going to do is work with the authorities who are coming onto our campus. We’re not going to share information. We’re not going to have our police department cooperate unless we are forced by court order.”
Schill doesn’t go as far as calling the U of O a “sanctuary campus.” Oregon State University President Ed Ray told students Wednesday the school will “Do everything we can to prevent anyone associated with OSU from being deported.”
The leader of the California State University system has declared all the campuses to be sanctuaries for undocumented students.
