Student groups held a rally Friday on the University of Oregon campus to show support and solidarity for Muslim Students. The action is in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration ban.
Speakers at the rally included representatives of Jewish, Muslim, Black, Native American and Latino groups.
Mayra Elida Jacquez is with the Muslim Student Association.
She says they feel called upon to take action in resistance to the president’s executive order banning immigrants and refugees from predominantly Muslim countries..
“Muslims that are being persecuted in this country right now, it’s kind of a wake-up call." Jacquez says, "If we don’t do something we’re all going to be left behind in those marginalized slots and we’re tired of it. All of us are just tired. And it’s really great that all these groups are showing support for us because we really feel like we can change things.”
Jacquez says she and her fellow students will keep coming out and taking action to stand up to the Trump administration.
Efforts are underway to create an incident reporting hotline and rapid response team to help when there are hate incidents in the Eugene area. A church and a couple businesses have recently been targeted with Nazi graffiti.
