Valuable Band Instruments Stolen From South Umpqua High

Over the Thanksgiving break, someone broke into the South Umpqua High School band room in tiny Myrtle Creek and stole several expensive instruments. --This just a couple weeks before their holiday concert.

The theft could have meant catastrophe for the budding musicians of this high school band. Two tenor saxophones, five flutes and two guitars were stolen. Some belonged to the school Others were owned by students.

Dave Ehrhardt is Vice Principal at South Umpqua High. He says the band has been getting by with spare instuments. But that’s nothing like playing your own. After word got out about the burglary, he says community response in this rural town was swift.

Ehrhardt: “There’s a family that’s very interested with helping us out with cash donation to help offset our losses. Somebody else offered to sell us a wonderful bass guitar and amp, valued at about $1,000 for twenty cents on the dollar.”

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office continues to investigate the instrument theft and hopes anyone with information will contact them. Meanwhile, “the show must go on.” The SUHS Band and Choir concert will be held December 10th.
