Video Posted on YouTube Helps Catch Eugene Burglar

Lane County Sheriff's Office

Social media is credited with identifying a burglary suspect in Eugene. Police posted a home surveillance video on YouTube Tuesday. It showed a man entering a room at the top of a flight of stairs, armed with a large knife. The suspect takes what appears to be a computer. Police say the burglary was captured on video after a person house sitting for the owner set up a camera to watch the cats while the owners were away.

Within hours of posting the surveillance video to YouTube and sharing it with the media, detectives received a positive identification of the suspect, 41-year old Richard Dutra, of Eugene.

Property crimes detectives set up surveillance at a storage unit where Dutra and his girlfriend, Cynthia Winters were observed in a stolen motor home. A search recovered property from the burglary as well as from another theft in Springfield. The couple was taken into custody. Dutra was lodged at the Lane County Jail and charged with burglary, aggravated theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Winters was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The stolen property is being inventoried and returned to the rightful owners. Springfield Police assisted in the investigation.
