Whoville Residents And Advocates Ask City For More Time

Rachael McDonald

Advocates for the Eugene homeless encampment known as Whoville are pushing for an extension of a deadline to close down the camp.  They expect the City will begin the process of evicting residents Tuesday.

The City of Eugene is slated to have Whoville completely cleared by a City Council-imposed April 15th deadline.  Advocate Jennifer Frenzer says the camp needs more time.  The closure is coinciding with efforts to move 15 of the most vulnerable camp residents to a new “rest stop” site near Autzen Stadium.  The main problem is that organizers don’t yet know exactly where that site will be.

Frenzer:  “So we haven’t been able to set up and prepare the spot.  And get the pallets in. So the process is a little bit slowed down.  That’s why we’re hoping we can have a reprieve.  You know people are asking for bags and boxes to move their things, but we need to know where to move them to.”

On Monday, a group went to city offices seeking a meeting with City Manager John Ruiz.  Frenzer says he was not there, but staff promised to forward on their request.
