Workers Clean Up Huge Mess At Shasta Lake, Left By UO Students

Jennifer Cox / Facebook

The University of Oregon is in the national news again, not in a good way. Hundreds of students left a huge mess on an island in Northern California’s Shasta Lake.

The rubbish left at Slaughterhouse Island after a massive weekend party included feces, tampons, and empty bottles. Phyllis Swanson with Shasta Trinity National Forest says it was remarkable how much was left behind.
“What was strange about this though is they also left a lot of personal items. There was close to 100 tents and sleeping bags, clothes, ice chests with food, alcohol, un-opened packages of food.”
The students left items with U of O and Lambda Chi Alpha logos. Swanson says the cleanup took about 2 dozen workers a couple of days. They’ve heard from students at the U of O and others offering to help, but refused because of safety concerns. Swanson hopes the next visitors will be respectful.
“Feel free, come visit us. But please, if you can pack it in. you can certainly pack it out.”
