Crowds at Sunday’s Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene got to see Rudy Winkler break an American record in the hammer throw. Winkler threw 82.71 meters, beating the previous record of 82.52 set by Lance Deal in 1996.
The Olympic Track & Field Trials, put off by a year because of the pandemic, are underway at Hayward Field in Eugene. When they’ve been held here in past years, the Eugene area experienced a $37-million economic boost, according to industry experts.

TrackTown USA has announced that recent changes to Oregon health regulations means spectators will be able to watch the Olympic Trials in person at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. The trials are scheduled for June 18-27.
