Solid research shows that students who take career and technical education courses are significantly more likely to graduate from high school than comparable peers. In 2016, voters in Oregon passed Measure 98, the High School Graduation and College and Career Readiness Act. Under this act, districts receive funds to establish or expand career and technical education programs in high schools, as well as to improve access to post-secondary programs and expand dropout-prevention strategies in high schools.

Oregon has an inordinately high number of incidents of harassment of schoolchildren arising from racial, ethnic, religious, or gender-identity intolerance, according to national statistics. Statistically Lane County leads the state in such offenses. In addition, the nature and number of incidents in Eugene/Springfield area schools has increased since the November 2016 U.S. Presidential election.

Dr. Gustavo Balderas, Eugene 4J's new superintendent, addressed teachers, staff and administrators from the district this [Thursday] morning. Most were meeting him for the first time.

The response to the new Superintendent was overwhelmingly positive. His speech received a standing ovation, unusual for a back to school presentation. Doug Doerfert directs the band at South Eugene High School:

Doerfert: "I felt it was very inspirational, just to see a different background from another superintendent."

The Eugene 4J School Board voted unanimously Wednesday to hire Doctor Gustavo Balderas as new superintendent.

An education administrator with strong Oregon ties is the top choice to become Eugene's next school superintendent. The Eugene School Board Thursday named Dr. Gustavo Balderas as the person they want to lead the district after Superintendent Shelly Berman leaves at the end of the academic year.
