In the summer of 1926, several thousand performers gathered at Hayward Field for the world premiere performance of “Klatawa: A Pageant of Transportation.” The occasion of Klatawa — from the Chinook word for “to travel” or “to go” — was the joining of eastern and western Oregon with a southern Pacific rail line between Klamath Falls and Eugene. A year later, the last of Eugene’s trolley-cars ceased running. About this time, the Ford Motor Company replaced its Model T with the Model A, the best-selling car of its time.
