A memorial was held Friday for a 57-year old woman who died on the streets of Eugene. Her death has once again raised the question of why more isn’t being done to shelter homeless people. KLCC’s Tiffany Eckert reports from First Christian Church.

This Saturday evening, November 14th, at the First Christian Church in Eugene, there will be a benefit concert for Womenspace to support their work against domestic violence, a concert which will also launch the new band Halie and the Moon. It’s a very different musical direction for vocalist Halie Loren, away from jazz and into acoustic poetic dream pop on their debut CD, Blue Transmissions Vol. 1 . Rachel Collins from Womenspace and Halie Loren visited the KLCC studios.

Community Alliance of Lane County presents a dramatic reading of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech A Time to Break Silence on Sunday, April 12th at First Christian Church in Eugene. Carol Horne Dennis and Marion Malcolm give an excerpt of the speech, and talk about its continued relevance in 2015.

UPDATE: Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 11:20 A.M.:

The Egan Warming Centers confirmed they are activated for tonight, Saturday. But they will NOT be open on Sunday and Monday nights because the overnight temperatures will not be cold enough.

Those needing to get to a Warming Center tonight can ride LTD for free - just tell the driver you need to get to a warming center.  St Vincent de Paul will provide shuttle service from the First Christian parking lot behind the church to other sites from about 5:30 pm- 8:30 pm.

Homelessness came to the forefront locally two years ago when members of Occupy Eugene put the issue at the top of their list of concerns. Since then, advocates have continued to press for safe places for people to sleep. The new "Opportunity Village" is a pilot program aimed at giving people a second chance.  Its grand opening is Saturday (October 5, 2013.)
