The Register-Guard is again downsizing its newsroom. In a short article on Sunday, the paper announced it will eliminate the role of Executive Editor.

The day before GateHouse Media took over the Register Guard, there was an exodus of high level employees, including the newspaper’s managing editor and publisher.

Although the newspaper’s sale to Gatehouse Media is still pending, Register Guard employees have been asked to re-apply for their jobs. As KLCC’s Tiffany Eckert reports, some layoffs have already been announced.

The civil lawsuit brought by former Register-Guard newspaper reporter Serena Markstrom was dismissed in court Wednesday. The dismissal was based on a pre-trial motion finding destruction of evidence. The judgment was rendered just before jury deliberation.

On Friday, Lawyers for former Register Guard reporter Serena Markstrom rested their discrimination case in Lane County Circuit Court.  KLCC’s Tiffany Eckert was there.

Jury selection begins in Eugene Tuesday for the discrimination case brought by Serena Markstrom against The Register-Guard newspaper. Forty-eight prospective jurors will be whittled down to twelve, possibly by the end of the day.

In a pre-trial hearing this morning, Lane County Circuit Judge Josephine Mooney hashed out language for statements and instructions to jurors.

Wednesday the Register-Guard published a front page story headlined "Secret school emails released." The article outlined the contents of personal emails and text messages between individual Eugene 4-J school board members concerning Superintendent Sheldon Berman. (see statements below)

The documents were accidentally sent to the newspaper by the law firm representing the Eugene school district.
