The Oregon Coast Aquarium says an injured sea otter that came under its care last week has died. The otter’s injuries were consistent with those of a shark bite, although the exact cause is unknown.
The aquarium said its staff provided care to the animal around the clock, but the injuries ultimately proved fatal.
“Rehabilitation of stranded animals can be very challenging, as they are medically compromised when they arrive at our facility,” said the aquarium's Director of Husbandry, Jim Burke in a press release. “Our team put in a great effort with diagnostics, treatment and care, but the underlying conditions were too great to overcome.”
The aquarium, located in Newport, said the animal will be sent to a United States Fish and Wildlife Service veterinary facility for a complete necropsy.
