The Eugene - Springfield Fire and Eugene Police Departments took additional steps to reduce the number of fireworks violations last (Friday) night. Additional officers were on patrol from 8 pm to 2 am. According to a preliminary report, more than 160 people called in complaints about fireworks. That's down from 2013 which had more than 200. In June, the Eugene City Council approved two city code changes regarding fireworks. Legally purchased fireworks can now only be used between June 23rd and July 6th and December 31st and January 1st. And use of fireworks during unapproved times is now included in the Social Host Ordinance, which holds individuals criminally responsible for hosting, organizing, and allowing an unruly event. Law enforcement made 68 contacts Friday night in response to complaints and 9 citations for illegal fireworks.
