Friday afternoon, a Lane County jury awarded the mother of Lauren Jones $1.5 million in a malpractice case against PeaceHealth Medical Center.

Dorian Sanders filed a civil lawsuit against the hospital after her daughter, a freshman at the University of Oregon, died of meningococcemia during an outbreak in 2015.

The trial, which lasted nearly three weeks, ended with a decision for the plaintiff. The nine to three verdict found PeaceHealth negligent in one or more ways which caused the death of 18-year old Lauren Jones. Here’s Dorian Sanders right after the verdict was announced:

“Basically, there was a mistake that was made and I’m just glad that justice was served.”

Sanders says she is proud that her daughter’s death was the catalyst for a massive vaccination effort at the U of O. During the time of the disease outbreak, 22,000 students received the meningococcemia vaccine.
