Get Ready To Drop, Cover And Hold On During Annual Earthquake Drill

Oregon Office of Emergency Management

Hundreds of thousands of Oregonians are expected to participate in an annual earthquake drill this Thursday.

It’s called the “Great Oregon Shakeout” and it’s part of a global day of awareness on how to react in the event of an earthquake. At 10:17 on the morning of October 17, participants will find shelter in the way they would if a real quake had struck.

A video on the Great Shake Out website offeers tips on what to do during a quake, as well as suggestions for what to do afterwards. More than 700,000 people are expected to participate in Oregon. That number includes employees of many state and local government agencies, as well as students at K-12 schools and colleges.
