Oregon homeowners struggling to make their mortgage payments may qualify for assistance from a state program.

The money comes from the U.S. Treasury's Hardest Hit Fund. Oregon is one of 18 states to receive money for foreclosure prevention – about $314 million since 2010.

Since then, the state has provided assistance to more than 12,000 Oregonians.

The latest iteration launched last Wednesday. Within the first hour, 100 Oregonians had already applied to the Home Rescue program.

Mike Boyer is spokesman for Oregon Housing and Community Services.

BOYER: "They can receive up to one year of mortgage payments with a maximum benefit of $20,000. Also, they may be eligible for a reinstatement benefit to bring their mortgage current and that is a maximum benefit of $15,000."

So far, Boyer says 343 Oregonians have applied for foreclosure assistance.
