Lane and Douglas counties both saw an increase in unemployment rates last month.

Lane County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 5.9 percent in July. That’s up nearly half a percent from June. Douglas County saw a similar increase.
Regional economist Brian Rooney says this upswing is pretty standard.
“Because students, who are out of school, are often looking for work," says Rooney. "Also you have graduates; you know they’re looking for work. Also we see elevated immigration in the summer months.”
Rooney says they adjust for the season to account for factors leading to high rates, but they’re seeing more unemployment than normal during the summer.
