The Oregon State Public Interest Research Group released their annual Trouble in Toyland report, week. Findings warn holiday shoppers of potential safety hazards for children.
The report highlighted nine hazards this year, including mislabeled toys, and choking hazards like Calico Critters, which are small flocked animals, and loud toys that can cause hearing damage.
Maribeth Guarino, a High Value Health Care Fellow with OSPIRG, said may COVID-19 increase risk for how children play as parents balance working from home and virtual schooling.
“As children are spending more time especially, potentially with older siblings and potentially with less supervision,” Gaurino said. “We think it’s really important for parents to be extra cautious and to be aware that these toy hazards are out there.”
Other hazards to be on the lookout for are recalled toys that have appeared on websites like Ebay, and in-app purchases that parents may be unaware of.
