Several Eugene-area groups have extended Veterans Day celebrations beyond November 11th.

Willamalane Parks and Recreation Superintendent Michael Wargo says his staff wanted to thank veterans for more than one day. They're offering one dollar drop-in rates for the month of November:

Wargo: “That could be to come on in to the pools, to come into the Bob Keefer Center to shoot some hoops, and really, just to be active."

The University of Oregon is honoring veterans all week. Michael Thomas, the Veteran's Program coordinator, says one in four Lane County suicides is a veteran and nationally...

Thomas: “Twenty-two veterans a day on average are victims of suicide. So we wanted to do a pushup challenge for students in the area to basically do 22 just to honor and recognize that there's a mental health issue and a suicide issue for veterans in the community.”

The event is Tuesday at noon in the EMU. Thomas says there will be a tailgate at Saturday's football game and a week-long donation drive for for homeless veterans. He says his department serves about 450 people at the university.
