More than 200 people are expected to show up at the Project Homeless Connect in Newport this Friday.
It can be difficult for homeless people to get around the community to access services. Project Homeless Connect brings providers under one roof. Haircuts, dental care, clothing and help signing up for health care or benefits are a few of the offerings.
Lola Jones is Executive Director of Samaritan House Family Shelter. She says Lincoln County met a few years ago to update their 10-year plan to end homelessness. Homeless Connect is one of the plan’s success stories, as well as bringing in AmeriCorps volunteers.
Jones: “Through the AmeriCorps program we’ve been able to strengthen and support a lot of our local homegrown agencies her in Lincoln County, particularly the McKinney-Vento program in our school district, which is responsible for making school accessible for homeless youth.”
Project Homeless Connect is Friday from 9am-3pm at the Church of the Nazarene in Newport. Volunteers and donations are still needed. Donations are accepted at Samaritan House, 715 S.W. Bay St., Newport.
