The third annual Open Streets Corvallisevent is scheduled for this Sunday, August 18.
This year’s edition links two parks about a mile apart in south Corvallis. Several neighborhood streets will be closed to motorized traffic from noon until 4 p.m. in order to clear the way for walkers, bikers, and other people-powered forms of transportation.
Event organizer Ilene McClelland said the day is meant to get people thinking about ways to get around without a car, as well as to build community. “It’s not just about thinking about streets and parks physically, like the infrastructure, but also thinking about them in different ways where you’re sharing experiences with your neighbor and other community members,” she said.
Open Streets Covallis also features live music, games, outdoor fitness classes and kids activities. A similar event takes place in Eugene in late September.
