University of Oregon has announced Dan Lanning as their new head football coach. Lanning is the current defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Georgia.
The top job at Oregon will be Lanning’s first head coaching position.
In Saturday’s announcement, Lanning thanked the University for the opportunity and said “It is clear there is a vision and alignment within the entire Duck Nation. We are staged for success and look forward to building on the strong foundation that currently exists in Eugene. Our goal is to win championships and develop our players both on and off the field.”
Lanning will stay with Georgia through their playoff run. No. 3 Georgia (12-1), with the top-ranked defense in the country this season, will play No. 2 Michigan (12-1) in the College Football Playoff at the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
Oregon began their search for a new head coach after Mario Cristobal announced his departure for Miami Dec. 6. Oregon wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon is the Ducks' current interim coach who will be at the helm when No. 14 Oregon faces No. 9 Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29.
Lanning will be the Ducks’ 35th head football coach in the program’s history. Before his time at Georgia, Lanning was on the coaching staffs at Pittsburgh (2011), Arizona State (2012-13), Sam Houston State (2014), Alabama (2014), and Memphis (2016-17).
