The Eugene Public Library has been selected to receive a state funded reading grant.

The Ready to Read grant will be awarded to the library in the amount of 20,000 dollars. Grants are available for libraries across the state and they help supplement libraries’ budgets.

Library director Connie Bennett says the grant helps programs that are volunteer run.

Bennett: “We have support for our Story-Time-To-Go project, which is a program that takes library services to really young kids that aren’t able to come into the library because they’re in daycare or pre-school or something like that.  It takes the library services out to them where they are.”

Bennett says the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that children be read to every day from birth until they enter school. This is the only state funded grant that is awarded to public libraries.
