The Eugene Symphony On The Air: The Sound Of Color

Amanda Smith

The Eugene Symphony continues a three-part exploration of its Soundwaves virtual concert series by showcasing a few of the string orchestra pieces performed last season. In this episode, you’ll hear a remarkable and new approach to music-making by Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, who created a color map for musicians to follow rather than traditional notes on manuscript paper. We also explore Bernard Herrmann’s music for the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho, along with Vaughan Williams’s lush and sweeping Fantasia, which sounds simultaneously both ancient and modern. Music Director & Conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong and violist Shauna Keyes share their insights, and Conducting Fellow Daniel Cho hosts.

Works heard on the program:

Hildur Guðnadóttir: From the Other Place (recorded April  22, 2021)

Bernard Herrmann: Suite from Psycho  (recorded April 22, 2021)

Ralph Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (recorded May 20, 2021)
