A district official says students at Cascade Middle School in Eugene are still coping with the deadly force incident that happened outside its entrance two weeks ago.
On the morning of January 11th, two police officers struggled with Charles Landeros, who was in a custody dispute over a student. Police bodycam video shows Landeros produced a gun and fired twice at the officers, prompting one to shoot back, fatally wounding the parent.
The Lane County District Attorney’s Office has since called the police response justified, given the potential harm Landeros could have caused to the officers, students, and staff.
“The report is a reminder of how impactful the event must’ve been for those directly involved," says Pat McGillivray, spokesman for the Bethel School District.
"The officers in particular, and we know there are extended family and friends of all three individuals involved. And our thoughts are with them as well.”
McGillivray says counseling services were expanded in the week following the shooting.
Meanwhile, Landeros’ relatives say they’re arranging an independent investigation into the incident.
